Cr Nathan Hersey
Councillor, South Gippsland Shire Council
Cr Nathan Hersey is a passionate and dedicated advocate for the South Gippsland and broader Gippsland community.
Born and raised in Gippsland, he left the region to pursue higher education, earning a Diploma in Business Management and Human Resources, followed by a Bachelor of Arts. Cr Hersey is also a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Cr Hersey’s career included volunteer work in aid and development, later leading into a role of an adviser for a member of Federal Parliament in 2012. Over nine years as an adviser to Members of Parliament and ministers, Cr Hersey developed his leadership skills in critical areas such as environment, small business and health, and notably was a parliamentary adviser to the Minister for Health during the early COVID-19 response.
After relocating to South Gippsland with his wife Lucy and son Hugo, Cr Hersey actively engaged in local initiatives and was elected to the South Gippsland Council in 2021, serving as Deputy Mayor and later Mayor. Re-elected to council in 2024, Cr Hersey continues to serve the community and holds positions on the board of the Municipal Association of Victoria as the Gippsland representative and Deputy President (non-metro), and previously held the role as Deputy Chair of One Gippsland.
Additionally, Cr Hersey is a small business owner, a farmer, and president of the Australian Highland Cattle Society, along with being involved with several local community groups.
Cr Hersey views his opportunity to represent others as a privilege, whilst he leverages his diverse expertise in business, agriculture, and government to effectively tackle local challenges and promote a strong and sustainable future for South Gippsland.
